For all of our Black Queens, this is your Queen of Hair.

Madam C.J. Walker was an African American businesswoman, philanthropist, and political and social crusader. She was born Sarah Breedlove on December 23, 1867, and she died on May 25, 1919. The Guinness Book of World Records lists her as the first self-made rich woman in America. Although other women (such as Mary Ellen Pleasant) may have been the first, their riches is not as well-documented, according to a number of sources.

Walker formed the company Madam C. J. Walker Manufacturing Company and used it to create and promote a range of cosmetics and hair care items for black women. She became well known for her activism and philanthropy as well. She supported the arts and contributed money to several causes, including the NAACP.
